This article is an excerpt from our eBook which is available on Amazon Kindle.
What To Sell
Nothing! (except for Attention). Advertisers are willing to pay to get their ads in front of potential customers, so if you have a lot of people watching your content, eventually you will be big enough to make money off of showing ads to your audience.
How to Get the Products
Make Content. In this case you can make blog posts and monetize views with banner ads, or make videos, or post on Instagram and Social Media and eventually sell sponsored posts.
How to Get Customers
What is really nice about this business model is your audience doesn’t have to pay you any money. They aren’t even really your customers. They are paying you with their attention, which is valuable to advertisers.
Advantages
With no money needed you can just start a YouTube channel with an iPhone camera. It’s so easy An 8-year-old boy is making $26 million a year on YouTube reviewing toys. But he is the top influencer on YouTube right now.
Disadvantages
The hardest part about this business model is that since it is “so easy” for anyone to get started (there is no barrier to enter the market) then it is also crowded and hard to stick out. The reason we admire the top influencers is because they are doing something different to get the momentum to become a mini-celebrity. And not everyone can make videos that are appealing enough to a mass audience.
Risks
A main risk that comes to mind if you are using social media to grow your audience, ultimately you DO NOT own the platform or your followers. At any time, you can be kicked off the platform or the algorithm could change, dramatically impacting your views.
Additionally, being a “mini-celebrity” comes with some disadvantages in loss of privacy.
